The MetroHealth Rehabilitation Institute of Ohio provides outpatient rehabilitation services and therapies at MetroHealth Medical Center, including:
Driver Rehabilitation
Services are provided by an occupational therapist who is a certified driver rehabilitation specialist and licensed driving instructor. Driver rehabilitation is designed for individuals who have incurred an amputation, stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury or other neurological condition.
- Driving Evaluation: An objective one on one assessment evaluates a person's potential to begin or resume safe independent driving. Evaluation includes a clinical screening of physical, visual, and cognitive/perceptual abilities. The evaluation concludes with on-road assessment behind the wheel of our evaluation sedan or van with modifications if necessary.
- Driver Rehabilitation/Training: An individualized one-on-one program that addresses specific areas of concern or impairments that may have been identified during the driving evaluation. If required, the rehabilitation/training is provided using adaptive driving aids. This program may include completion of the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles road and maneuverability test to obtain appropriate restrictions for necessary adaptive driving aids.
- Vehicle Modification Consultation: Provides an individualized prescription of necessary vehicle modifications following successful completion of a driver evaluation or driver rehabilitation/training.
Admission Criteria
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Have a valid driver's license or driver's permit
- Be seizure free for 12 months or deemed by a physician to have seizures under medical control

Dysphagia Program
The Dysphagia program is designed for patients affected by mechanical or neurological disorders. A physiatrist and a certified speech-language pathologist evaluate each patient to determine the patient's specific needs.
The goals of the program include:
- Diagnosis and treatment of swallowing disorders to prevent aspiration
- Development of compensatory strategies to assist with swallowing
- Avoiding malnutrition and dehydration
- Increase independence in eating
- Assist the family in caring for patient's special nutritional needs.

Hand Therapy
Certified Hand Therapists treat a variety of upper extremity and hand injuries, including but not limited to tendon repairs, repetitive strain injuries, burns, fractures, brachial plexus injuries, and joint replacements.
Services include:
- Splinting
- Functional training
- Range of motion and strengthening
- Therapeutic exercise

Industrial Rehabilitation - WorkLink
MetroHealth's WorkLink Industrial Rehabilitation program utilizes a multidisciplinary team approach to manage a variety of work-related injuries. Accurate diagnosis and timely treatment enable the injured worker to return to the workforce safely and expediently.

Lymphedema Management
Specially trained occupational and physical therapists treat the abnormal swelling in the arms, legs, face, or neck. Treatment includes:
- Manual lymph drainage
- Decongestive therapy
- Skin care
- Instruction in activities of daily living

- Relaxation and stress management

Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation
Treatment of patients in all age ranges with back or neck pain, hand and wrist injuries, sports-related injuries and other joint problems of the knee, shoulder, ankle, and foot.

NeuroRehabilitation
Occupational therapists, physical therapists, and speech pathologists specialize in the needs of those patients with neurological deficits including, but not limited to:
- Spinal cord injury
- Stroke
- Brain injury
- Amputations
- Multiple sclerosis

The goals of neurorehabilitation may include:
- Ability to participate in avocational activities
- Increase community reintegration

Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapists design programs to help patients achieve maximum independence in their daily activities. Services provided include helping patients gain improvement in self-care (dressing, grooming, bathing, and eating), home management activities, parenting, and upper extremity function. Often, occupational therapists will introduce assistive devices, adaptive equipment, and casting/splinting to help individuals gain function in their activities of daily living.

Pediatric Therapy
Specialized pediatric occupational therapists, physical therapists, and speech-language pathologists evaluate and treat a variety of special needs and diagnoses. The goal of treatment is to help each child develop, improve, or regain the skills needed for independence at home and school.

Physical Therapy
Physical therapy treatment focuses on improving mobility, relieving pain, and restoring function. The goal of the treatment program is to assist patients in achieving their maximum level of independence in order to stay as active as possible at home and in the community. The physical therapist assesses and treats the areas of strength, joint range of motion, balance, tone, endurance, gait, transfers, mobility, and functional activities. Equipment needs are also assessed and obtained to maximize mobility and independence.

Speech-Language Pathology
Speech-language pathologists evaluate and treat deficits in the areas of speech, language, thinking, and swallowing. They offer patient-tailored communication aides and strategies to assist patients with aphasia, cognitive deficits, voice, or other communication disorders.

Vocational Rehabilitation Services
Vocational services are designed to help individuals develop reasonable expectations of employment based on their individual strengths and limitations. Vocational counselors identify these factors through various tests, which assess the person's readiness for work.

Wheelchair Seating Clinic
The goal of the wheelchair seating clinic is to help individuals maximize their potential with appropriate seating and positioning. The therapists in the clinic work with the individual to evaluate and recommend mobility devices, including manual wheelchairs, powered wheelchairs, and specialty wheelchairs that tilt, recline, elevate, or stand. The evaluation includes physical and cognitive abilities, as well as environmental and community issues related to access. The therapists are able to recommend the most appropriate cushion, utilizing a state-of-the-art pressure mapping system, in order to encourage skin integrity.
